We have stayed at Whatamonga Homestay every year for 5 years. I would say it is our favorite place to stay in New Zealand.
The views of the Queen Charlotte Sounds are breath taking. We've walked down to the boat house and taken out the kayaks, watched the sailboat races from our balcony, and enjoyed wonderful leisurely breakfasts with our hosts.
Colette really makes you feel at home, and if you request it may even prepare a special evening meal. She provides excellent suggestions for things to do and see in the area as well. Just a few minutes outside Picton, it's a perfect location if you want to be on the water and still close enough for day trips to the fabulous Marlborough Wineries.

We spent three nights at this lovely homestay during our latest three week driving tour of the South Island. Our goal was to find quiet accommodation on the outskirts of Picton, and Whatamonga Homestay suited us perfectly. From the moment we drove down the steep driveway until the minute we said our final good-bye, we felt completely at home and spoiled by owner Colette.
The first thing we noticed upon entering our self-contained unit (#2) was the stunning view of the Marlborough Sounds from the floor to ceiling windows covering an entire wall. WOW.
From our private balcony we could see the Interislander ferries crossing the straight to and from Picton.
We found the unit compact, but spotless, comfortable and impressively well-equipped. It’s an open plan studio unit, with king sized bed, small lounge area, kitchenette and separate bathroom. It contained everything we needed plus many thoughtful extra touches; fresh fruit, cookies, candies, bottled water, bathrobes, extra towels, natural personal care products, you name it.
The place is nicely decorated, and finished to a high standard, right down to the linens and towels. Although we visited during the winter, we were warm and cozy.
We joined Colette in her home for a cooked breakfast and good conversation every morning. She is truly a lovely woman and a fantastic hostess.
I can't recommend this homestay enough, it's a real gem.

This homestay, located about 9km from Picton, offers excellent service, high quality accommodation in superb environment. And Colette, the host, cooked us a lovely meal with nice NZ wine. Stayed there 9 years ago and the high standards have been maintained.
